Dog Sitting

They do not permit their dog

— a Lab who ascribes to the motto

that life is a contact sport —

into the house, except

to run down the hall at night

up the stairs to her crate

which has a cozy looking pillow.

Otherwise, she stays in the drafty garage.

I did not understand any of this

when I agreed to watch her.

Nor did I look at the forecast,

a Real Feel of minus 2!

I brought her in to warm up

but she is clearly not comfortable

settling anywhere

except my lap.  At least 80 pounds

of friendly dog, tail wagging,

trying her best to snuggle

into the puppy pile we create together.
