Timing is Everything

In other times, my kind would rhyme

until hoarse, filling the air with magical

incantations and wondrous stories

composed in the deep, silent places

where the molten lava of

creativity seethes.  Technology and

modern times are a bit of a

complication, but I keep

the airwaves open

receptive on my daily drives

past the edges of the forest.

I’m just an antenna;

the poems come with a force

that bends trees and snaps

off dead branches, hurling

them like weapons, a cover

for the tiny ones alighting

in the dim recesses,

tentative and shy, sure to fly

away at the slightest

inattention.  I accept them

like thoughtful gifts to an expectant

mother; their utility will become clear

only after hard labor, punctuated

by low guttural screams

as I try to align myself with

inexorable forces, opening me

with pitiless savagery

to this brand new

opportunity to bring forth.
