Every Being Lightens

We play all day and he’s quite
judicious, sometimes opening the

closet door to peer at the high
shelves, calling, I need you,

to clarify just what he’s chosen
for us. He eats a juicy

peach and runs away and so
I sing of the joy I’ll feel

when he returns–resolutely
ignoring those sticky fingers

loose in the house. A song
ameliorates his rush and I

stand by my lyrics, so
he warbles his tremolo

I’m ba-aaack! anticipating
what I’ve promised. I beam

and we bask in mutual joy
zen of our connection, hug

before gently washing. When he suggests
let’s go outside and run!

he’s away like the wind.
Pausing to hug each tree

allows me to catch up.
The neighbor husky howls

for his attention and the silent
walkers are charmed from their

headphones. Starry-eyed open
heart moving us all from dis-

ease into a multilayered
kaleidoscope of love.

The last summer sun streams
into this fabric woven by

trees and boy and sky and
laughter, barefoot in green.
