Shore Leave

Purchasing the premise, family and friends
crowded the gangplank. I watched them descend
following a shiny lure I passed by.
They jeered from decks lower, thought themselves high.

I hitched my baggy trousers. Common sense,
nervy frugality hard to convince
because self-knowledge has been fiercely fought
tasting forbidden fruit appeals me not.

Here on the shore, watching the ships’ slow prow
through the rough waters, turn to birds here now.
Their ancient language speaks in symbols, songs
to clear, align with Earth, arighting wrongs.
