Who Cast This Spell?

The time to wake up is now! — Rob Brezsny

I am quite conversant with fairy tales and legends,

myths and folklore.  Held captive

by a spell for most of my life,

I intuit the key

to breaking these chains

lies in the pages of powerful

stories stripped to the bones

for childish consumption.

I am entranced

and the way out is carefully concealed

by the ever-spinning web

my culture, my religion, my community.

Today, like a Scottish Highlands leader,

curls cascading down my back,

my kilt teased by the breeze,

I sit tall on my horse,

a spear in one hand,

and my summoning stone held high.

I sound the clarion trumpet

to battle, to defend

everything that I love.

And they answer the call,

those who gave me the spark of life,

generations upon generations of ancestors

hastening from the mists

a vast throng of support.

Are they chanting, “freedom, freedom,”

or is that the beating

of my own heart?

We burst forward together

through the sticky threads.

The time for caution is long gone.

This is the battle frenzy,

and I claim my own life:

Here I waken!

Spell be broken!

Taking The Leap

This is my teacher:

he wakes me up

to the way I want to be in the world,

crouching with a wild grin

and leaping into my arms,

collapsing in laughter.

And again.

I use that ottoman

to prop my feet,

or maybe, if I desire change,

to plop my butt.

For him, it is a drum to smack,

a diving board,

a precipice to poise over

before leaping into the wild unknown.

There is so much joy

available for the agile mind,

the confident grace, body in motion.

And always, the threat

of pain, and the bruises

to reflect the missteps,

the hard knocks, jumping

without thought, with no plan.

The key seems to be: have faith

that strong resources are always there,

mostly invisible unless you

look through your heart.

Fling yourself into space

but first announce your intention

and know you will be caught —

just as I am there for him,

in each heart-stopping lesson

he blesses me with,

this pure generous

wake-up call.
